Divergent

Divergent, Film Review, Movie Review, The Flawed GuruDivergent was a movie I thought I should see, just in case it ended up being decent like The Hunger Games. Though I also ran the risk of it easily going down the road of being so-bad-it’s-good, like Twilight. What it was though, was something in between.

First, what was bad about it. The music! There were scenes where the music choices were so bad that I laughed, which is not a good thing. The heroine constantly being saved! When you’re the main character, and one of the main concepts is you being turned into a badass, why would you being constantly saved by the love interest be a good thing? Sure, have him be there to help, but her saving herself each time regardless would have been much stronger for the story and the character.

Spoilers! If these 5 factions ran so smoothly for years, why wouldn’t the ‘justice’ faction have scared the ‘smart’ faction into thinking their actions will see them all off to jail? Or maybe they needed to get the point across more that this was them taking over the whole system, and not just two factions?

Divergent, Film Review, Movie Review, The Flawed GuruAlso, why were there no fat people in this future, and I don’t remember seeing a single Indian person, and only one Asian person, even in the background. Is this a deeper metaphor for this particular future or just sloppy casting? Last but not least, there were a decent amount of little things that made me laugh, and not in a good way.

Now for the good. Decent enough acting. Decent enough directing. Decent enough writing. Entertainingish. Interestingish. And that’s about it. Ohh, and another bad thing. This film was 2 hours and 20 minutes! Far too long! Buuuuuuuuut, it was decent. I mean, I didn’t hate it, and I’ll likely see the two sequels they are making, but I’m very unlikely to remember this film for very long.

6.5 out of 10 from me!!!
