It’s not often a film comes out that seems to perfectly meld two very different and interesting genres. There have been a lot of alien films of late, and as ever, there are lots of gritty and more personnel stories about the youth growing up in various areas of the world in abject poverty. But has there ever been one that was about both?
Well, these filmmakers thought to combine these two very different genres and that’s how we got the awesome concept for Attack The Block. The poor youth of central London versus an invasion of a violent alien race! What more could you want from a genre bending film?
When I first heard about this film I thought it sounded like a great concept, and I was also under the impression it was going to be fairly low budget and may be more of a cult film than a well made slick bit of cinema. Though very quickly, those misconceptions were put to the side, as the film was in fact, from the very outset, a super slick and awesomely told and made film.
It had a great script, great directing, some awesome young and talented kid actors, and of course the great concept, made for one of the best and most unique British films I’ve seen in years. Dear I say since Shaun Of The Dead? Yeah, why not!
Sure the budget must have been smaller than other such alien Hollywood films, and it would have been nice to see maybe some more money invested into the film to help make it even better, but despite that, it was just a fricken damn awesome film and easily sits in that category of one of my favourite films from 2011!
9 out of 10 from me!
