As I went into Edge Of Tomorrow I was ready for a film that I hadn’t heard anything bad about, except for the fact the ending was a bit weak compared to the rest of the film. But with so much positive buzz about it I knew it was going to be a fun ride at the very least, but like with anything that’s hyped, it can be hard to live up to that tag.
First up let’s address Tom Cruise. This dude has made a shit load of films, and gets a lot of slack for his personal life, but it can’t be argued that he’s easily the top action star there has ever been. Looking back at his filmography, of the ones I’ve seen which is about 90% of them, the only one that stands out as average is Knight & Day. Other than that, every one of his films is either really good or awesome, and that stretches back for decades. That’s impressive!
So with him as the lead in this film already brings a level of quality to it, and he can’t help but make you like him when he’s on screen, and this film is nothing different. From the comedic moments, the smart mouth riffs, and even the more earnest moments, every one is performed in a rock solid manner by Cruise, and he grounds the film the whole way through. That’s not to say that Emily Blunt isn’t awesome either, as she played her role perfectly, and I actually really liked how the two characters relationship developed.
The action was pretty sweet, and it’s the best use of live action mech-suits I’ve seen to date, but the aliens were a little bit of a let down. I’m not really sure why I think that, as technically they did fight in a cool way, but for some reason they just didn’t connect with me. The story was really good and moved forward in a logical way, all except one moment where I had the, ‘that doesn’t make any kind of sense’ moment. Though I can’t remember anymore what that was about, so it can’t be that important.
The ending was all good, but I can see where some people might have an issue with it, but something tells me it was kind of set up for a possible sequel which could make the end make more sense if that’s the case. Though the fact it’s bombing at the box-office isn’t a good sign for a sequel even if there was going to be one.
9 out of 10 from me!!!
