When the first 21 Jump Street came out it was actually a massive surprise how good it was. I knew it was going to be at least ok because of the talent involved, as both Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum had riding stars, but I wasn’t ready for just how much I’d like it, and the self-aware jokes were just spot in. So when the trailers started hitting for 22 Jump Street, and it looked to continue the same quality, I was pumped!
If I’m sitting down to watch a comedy, I want one thing from it, for it to be funny, throughout. I don’t care about plot holes, I don’t care about character journeys, and often I don’t even care about the core story. I just want it to be funny. Which is exactly what this film did! Every moment of the film, without fail, had something funny, from subtle and clever, to outlandish and in your face, and I haven’t seen a funnier film this year by far!
Another awesome thing they did was the self-aware jokes, which are hard to pull off. An example of this is A Million Ways To Die In The West, which had many similar jokes, but most of them were too self-referential of itself and the fact it was a movie, but they were still kind of funny. Where as 22 Jump Street nailed that fine line to the point that I’m sure some people in the audience didn’t even know they were either taking the piss out of themselves or winking at the audience about the fact we were all watching a movie.
As I said earlier, when it comes to comedies often the surrounding environment, set-up, and general story plot points aren’t really important, but if you are able to make those things also work, then it’s an added bonus, and this film made those work. So not only was the film funny, it was actually a good watch as far as action comedies go. And my yard stick for the quality of a comedy is if I come out with so many funny lines and scenes I want to quote or talk about, that I actually struggle to remember them all, because then I know it’s won in my book. If I remember too clearly the only 3 funny moments of your comedy, then you’re in trouble.
9.5 out of 10 from me!!!
