How To Train Your Dragon 2

How To Train Your Dragon 2, Film Review, Movie Review, The Flawed GuruI seem to have this issue of thinking my girlfriend has seen all the movies I have, so there’s been a few times now that I take her along to a movie, that happens to be a sequel, only for her to say just before it, “I’ve never seen the first one”. Which, on the positive side means I get to enjoy the first with her at some point soon, but on the negative it means she may not like it as much seeing as she’s missed out on all the goodness from the first outing.

So with tonight’s film, How To Train Your Dragon 2, I have done it once again, as I also took for granted that she hadn’t seen one of my all time fave animated films, as the first film was such a surprise package to me, and I fricken loved it. Also with the Planet Of The Apes sequel up next week, and with her not having seen the first one of that either, means I get to sit down with her this weekend and enjoy the hell out of that one!

The first was such a surprise, for many reasons, but especially for doing things like maiming the main character. I mean, what other animated ‘kids’ film, blows off someone’s leg!? And I’m glad to say the sequel stepped it up one, as not only did it take the brave route of having a gay character, though only the audience members who were really listening carefully will know that, but it also kills off someone from the first film. Now that’s what I call fucking brave!

I remember loving the first as it was such a surprise to me, and maybe my expectations were too high for this one, but I don’t think it ever got as good as its predecessor. I still really liked it, and there were many great moments, from sweet to funny, to fairly epic, but I don’t think it got under my skin as much as the other one did. Still though, this was a great follow up and sits nicely along it to now make this is a great series!

9 out of 10 from me!
