Even though the Planet Of The Apes series is a pretty damn famous one, I’ve never actually seen any of the five originals, but I did see Tim Burton’s 2001 version, which I wasn’t a big fan of. Despite all that, it’s such a mainstream movie series that over the years I have actually gleaned enough knowledge about them that I almost feel like I have seen them.
So, when I heard there was a new version coming out and this time it was part reboot and part prequel, I was actually pretty excited, and when I saw the trailer I was even more excited! With a much darker and what looked to be a more personal angle, and with some great actors and amazing motion capture work by the wizards at WETA digital in New Zealand, I was truly excited and very happy when I got my media invite for the film.
Now, even though I haven’t seen all the films in the series, I’m sure more often than not you are rooting for the humans to win the day and rise up against the ‘dirty stinking apes’, but this film flipped that fully on its head. Never before have I wanted to see the human race attacked and themselves downtrodden for what they have done to these animals.
With an absolute sense of inevitability, I couldn’t help but often have a smile on my face as the tension built, as you knew that no matter what horrible things happened to these apes, they were going to get their chance to lay the smack down by the end of it. After what has been a bit of a disappointing summer blockbuster season, I have to say this has been one of the best ones and a very satisfying film! Can’t wait for a sequel and everyone will soon have a new champion to cheer for, the Andy Serkis motion captured Cesar!
9 out of 10 from me!
