Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat, The Flawed Guru, Movie, Film, ReviewI’m back to posting some of my old reviews, and this one comes from 2009!

I’ve seen four comedies over the last four weeks and it’s been great seeing such diverse ones. Couples Retreat is another film that had a great cast and a great trailer so I was hoping for big things. Also it was written by Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn who also star in the film. Favreau is now more famous for his directing than his acting since he directed the highly acclaimed and successful Iron Man film, but these two men co-wrote the great indie film, Swingers, so their writing talent also boded well for the film.

‘Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) are dangerously close to getting a divorce. In a last ditch effort to save their marriage, they decide to take a vacation to a tropical resort meant to help ailing couples through therapy. Short on cash, they enlist help from their friends to offset the cost through a group rate: the kid-raising Dave (Vince Vaughn) and Ronnie (Malin Akerman), the lovelessly married Joey (Jon Favreau) and Lucy (Kristen Davis), and the recently divorced Shane (Faizon Love) and his much younger girlfriend Trudy (Kali Hawk). The three other couples think they are just going to have fun and help their friends, but they realize they are in for having their relationships examined as well.’

This film had some gold comedy moments with a standout performance by the scene stealing yoga instructor. His few scenes were enough in themselves to get some great laughs. However, overall I didn’t think it held well together as some of the improvisation felt forced and unfunny and the story seemed to go wayward on a few occasions. Also the ending felt a little too unreal and never really connected with me and my expectations.

7 out of 10 from me!!!
