The second place we ate at on our 1st year anniversary trip away, was Huhu Cafe in Waitomo. We hadn’t really eaten anything since our breakfast, except for sharing an ice-cream midday, so by the time dinner came around, we were damn hungry.
To say the options for a nice anniversary dinner in Waitomo is limited would be a massive understatement, as literally we had only three options we could see, but Huhu had great reviews on Tripadvisor, which won them the day.
The first try had us turning back, as the power was out in our hotel, and it seemed to be effecting Huhu also as they were turning people away. So we decided to head to one of the other options, but once there it didn’t exactly seem like the place we wanted to have such a special occasion in, and plus their power was on, so we decided to head back to Huhu to see if theirs had maybe come back on.
Once back there we were glad to see the power was on, and we were soon ushered to their outdoor area to a nice table in the corner. Firstly we ordered a couple of ciders, and picked a couple of starters, with the Pumpkin & Cheddar Risotto Balls, and a classic side of Fries. The fries were good, and came with nice dips, especially the tomato sauce which was thick and rich, but the risotto balls very awesome!
For the mains I had the Mini Lamb Burgers, and my partner got herself the Lemon, Thyme & Garlic Roasted Chicken Leg. My burgers were simple, but were so good, and taking a bite out of them just felt like my teeth were sliding through butter it was that smooth. I also got a bit of the chicken as well, which tasted fantastic.
All up we were damn surprised at how good the food and service was for Waitomo, as it easily matches up with anything else we’ve had in major cities. The only thing we regret was our phones had both run out of power and we had no photos to immortalise the occasion!
9 out of 10 from me!!!
