When it comes to Will Ferrell, I’ve tended to enjoy him as a bit part actor rather than a lead. Though when he’s teamed up with the right person in a double act to front a film, that’s where I think he also has a chance to shine, as he did in The Other Guys with Mark Wahlberg. When it comes to Kevin Hart on the other hand, I haven’t seen any of his films, I think, but I have seen his stand-up comedy, and he’s damn good. So with them teamed up, and a pretty good trailer out for the film, I had high hopes for this comedy.
There was a bit of a dud joke near the beginning of the film, which made me hope that would be the only one, as there had been good ones before it. Though you never know with comedies, as sometimes they can quickly go from kind of funny to not funny in a hurry. But after that the laughs flowed thick and fast, and the chemistry between the two leads was just spot on. The crowd we had was average size, but there was a good energy in the room with genuine laugh out loud moments that flowed through the viewing experience.
The story structure itself was as formulaic as you can get, though with its own twist, but you don’t come to these films for the story arch, you come for the laughs, and I left feeling very much like I got my monies worth. I’m sure the humour won’t be for everyone, and it’s not exactly a sophisticated humour, but sometimes just seeing sight gags and gross out moments is all you want and need.
8.5 out of 10 from me!!!
