When reviewing films, I often do a little bit of research on the film itself and the people involved. Even if this research doesn’t make it into the review, I still often enjoy learning a bit more about everything. Well, for years I thought Melissa McCarthy, the star of this film Spy, and Jenny McCarthy, the ex Playboy model and now general entertainment celebrity, were sisters.
That in itself was interesting if just on their different looks, but I always thought what was more interesting was their different career paths, with Jenny having been a pretty big star back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, and now Melissa being even more famous than her, in the 2010’s. So it came as a surprise that in fact they are only cousins, and actually Jenny is now married to New Kids On The Block member and actor Donnie Wahlberg. Funny that.
But I digress. Spy once again shows that Melissa is more than capable of leading a film, and her banter with her fellow cast mates, especially Rose Byrne, and her fellow spies Jason Statham and Peter Serafinowicz, was just awesome! Sure there were a few dead jokes, and I felt some casting wasn’t quite right, but for every moment that made you not laugh or cringe, there were a handful of others that made you laugh and clap. I hope this does well, as I’d love to see a follow up!
8.5 out of 10 from me!!!
