It’s not often I’m willing to head along to a film about male strippers, but then again it’s not often good films are made about them, which the first Magic Mike was. So when a sequel came out, I was always going to see it, as I tend to see everything anyway. But with a different director behind the film, it made me wonder if it was able to hold the same quality, especially when that new director doesn’t exactly have a solid track record behind him.
Looking into it though, it had the same writer as the first film, and funnily enough the director of the first stayed on as the director of photography, which was interesting to say the least. So with a lot of the same talent still involved, held out hope it could actually be as good as the first. But, in my eyes, this was a poor knock off that just didn’t hold onto the deeper story and themes that the first was built around.
The first half of the film was filled with many awkward shots, directing, and editing that just pulled me out of the movie, and the writing felt like it was paint by numbers. It was as if they had written 5 scenes, and then struggled to pull them together with barebones storytelling. Sure there were many fun moments, and the 7 girls, yes, 7 girls, I went with seemed to love it, but for me, there just wasn’t enough to keep me entertained throughout. Having said that though, the last 30 minutes was fun enough to at least not leave a horrible taste in the mouth.
7 out of 10 from me!!!
