I’ve been such a huge Jackie Chan fan over the years but it’s mainly been based around his Hong Kong 80’s and early 90’s hits. For some reason his late 90’s and 2000’s Hong Kong films never got to the same level as his earlier ones, and his Hollywood films are very hit and miss.
So, when I saw this collection from Chan’s big hit early films on my list of DVD’s to review for the Christmas season, with a few exceptions like Drunken Master 2 and Police Story 3, I jumped at the chance to check it out.
The 15 disk pack includes 12 films with Armour of God, Project A, Project A Part 2, Police Story, Police Story 2, The Young Master, Dragons Forever, Wheels on Meals, Shaolin Wooden Men, Battle Creek Brawl, Dragon Lord, and The Fearless Hyena.
One of the main things I loved about this pack was that it had four of Chan’s films which I had never seen before, and were his earlier 80’s Kung Fu films before he moved more into modern day set action films. One of those films in particular was a revelation as it wasn’t just good, like many of his other films, it was in fact brilliant.
That film was The Fearless Hyena from 1980 and was his first film as director. It was simply stunning to see him in the first stage of letting out his style of comedy action fighting, and also his range as an actor and director. Not to mention it must be one of his most heavily packed fighting movies, as it was epic fight after epic fight.
Another interesting thing I discovered was from the earliest film of the pack, Shaolin Wooden Men, where you see a very different looking Chan before his eye surgery, which I never knew he’d had done. All up this is a brilliant pack for Chan lovers or people who may know his modern work but haven’t had a taste of his older films.
9 out of 10 from me!!!
