I really do love a good stand up comedian, as often no two are alike. Also the range of subject matter joked about as well as how the jokes are delivered can be just as diverse. You have the straight up comedians who don’t use profanity or never get crude such as Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen DeGeneres, and on the other side you have the very crude, but still hilarious, comedians such as Chris Rock.
Well after watching my first ever stand up routine from Margaret Cho, I can safely put her in that bracket of the rude and crude stand up style. Beautiful is Cho’s 7th stand up special and I found she tended to talk about a lot of current events, political and social, which often has that routine set in stone at that period of time. This of course limits the life of those jokes, or social commentary, as they become less relevant as the years go by.
This is unlike the other type of comedians who stick to jokes about their lives and the lives of the people around them, which tend to last the distance as time moves on as often people’s problems are universal in our modern age. Not to mention when I say she’s crude, I mean she’s really crude, and she’s right up there with people like Chris Rock though just not at the same level of talent. I think that where Russell Peters is the comedian for the modern Asian/Indian audience, Cho is the equivalent for the gay/lesbian community.
7 out of 10 from me!!!
