When looking for a film to review recently, I saw the title for this Hong Kong action film and read in the description that it had Donnie Yen and Tony Leung in it and, for some reason, I thought this was the name of a more recent film.
When it turned up in my letterbox, I was surprised to see that the cover was of a completely different movie than what I thought it would be. Instead of a modern set police action film it was a historical set action film. However, being a big lover of Hong Kong cinema, I was keen to see it regardless.
I’m more used to the ‘real’ style of Hong Kong action films, so it had been a long time since I had seen a film like this one, with its hugely over the top style of fighting, with lots of wire work and gravity-defying flying around. You can see how films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon had been inspired by the country’s past films.
By the end of this film I had become used to the over the top action and it was easier on the eye than it was at the start of the film where the flipping and flying was hard to follow. With a half decent story this film held up well to other action films of its ilk, but it’s not one I’ll be watching again anytime soon.
7 out of 10 from me!!!
