Once Upon A Time In China

Once Upon A Time In China, Film, Movie, Review, The Flawed GuruWhen I first got into Hong Kong action films back in the early 90’s, I only followed two actors, which I guess made sense as only the top Asian action stars would have their films in New Zealand video stores. Those two actors were, of course, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, who are still to this day household names in Asia and now also all around the world.

For Chan, the Police Story series was the one that made him a superstar, and for Li it was the Once Upon A Time In China series that made him into the star he is today. So having the chance to check out this film was a mean ‘winding back the clock moment’, as the first and only time I had seen it was back in the early 90’s!

The action in this film was a mix of the more realistic style of fighting as well as the high-flying super style of Kung Fu and, unlike other films of that ilk, this film did both very well and was visually stunning. Some action films are a bit over the top, which rarely works, but this film does it with ease and shows why it made Li into the star that he is. Top notch action and a really decent story made for a film that has aged well.

8.5 out of 10 from me!!!
