Black Mass

Black Mass, Film, Movie, Review, The Flawed GuruWhen you think of Johnny Depp these days, and to be honest, the past 10 to 15 years, it’s easy to think of only his character work. Even then, when I say character work, I more mean the over the top kind of style rather than the more subtle kind. So when the trailer for Black Mass came out, it was a damn surprise. Not because he isn’t playing another character, as he is, but this one is based on a real person, and there was nothing over the top about this guy, except for his killer instinct and criminal ways that is.

It was so refreshing to see Depp in this role, as like with his others, he dives into them so much that you forget it’s him under that makeup, but in this role you also forget that he’s a nice guy, and instead he so effortlessly embodies a dangerous and scary thug. When looking back at this film, that’s what will stay with me and I’m sure others will take from it also, Depp’s performance. The film was damn good, don’t get me wrong, but ever so often a film comes out where a performance ends up being more memorable than the film, and this is one of those times.

The film itself was a bit long for my liking, and there were the odd times I felt the length and wished it would pick up the pace. Though other than that, it pretty much stayed solid throughout, and with a great supporting cast, good directing, and great writing, all made for a great film. Though like I said before, I think this film will be known more for Depp’s performance than the quality of the film itself. Which, is not always a bad thing, as at least it will be remembered for something.

9 out of 10 from me!!!
