With a title like, Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse, you can already see what the film is going to be about. I don’t mean that by the fact it has zombies in the title, but that a long title like that and the subject matter can only be one of two things, a horror comedy, or a comedy spoof. Either way it sounded like a lot of fun, and having seen a bit of it last week at the movies, as instead of a trailer they played a 3 minute clip, I knew I wanted to check it out.
The director was from the Paranormal Activity series, having written 2 through to 5, and also ended up directing the 5th instalment, which was easily the worst in the series, until the 6th came out and took that crown of course. With a cast on pretty much unknowns as well, meant that this film could easily have been straight to DVD, or VOD these days, but the fact it got the big screen treatment meant that despite the unknown cast and the dicey history of the director, I hoped it could still work.
Well, it did. It’s not on the same level as a Shaun Of The Dead, but it’s also not that far away either. Where it’s mainly lacking is the caring about the characters. You care about them a lot more than stock standard horror films, but it never got any deeper to make you really connect. On the other beats though, the comedy and horror, it did both equally well, with maybe the comedy more of a highlight. So though this could have been an easily forgotten film, it ended up being damn fun!
8.5 out of 10 from me!!!
