I’ve got to admit, I’ve never seen the cartoon. In fact I don’t think I’ve even seen parts of it. Sure I could see a few shots and know what it’s from, but that’s just because even though I haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean the visuals aren’t iconic in their own right. With a live action adaption on the cards, I was both intrigued and partly not interested at the same time. At the very least I had a blank slate going in to see it.
The animated film I knew was a musical, so I wondered if they would go down that path with the live action film. I didn’t really mind either way, and when no songs were sung, I was glad to just sit back and enjoy the film. The animation was amazing, and it’s one of those films that is kind of odd to make as a live action, as everything other than the boy, and I guess some of the scenery, was fake. Either way it was a cool and interesting mix of the two.
My biggest issue with the film is that it lulled me into thinking it wasn’t a musical, and then instead made a half arsed attempt to be one, with what I feel were a 1/2 song and a 3/4 song. That might sound odd, but to me they only had two songs, which made it neither a musical or a non musical. And those two songs weren’t even fully fledged musical numbers, instead they were almost passed off as spoken word, which is why I gave them fractions of actual songs. It felt really jarring, and that was the biggest let down. Other than that though I really enjoyed the film. So if it had of stuck with either being an outright musical, or not, then I would have rated it higher, but because it did it half assed, then my rating is lower.
8.5 out of 10 from me!!!
