On the weekend just gone I decided it had been too long since we had gone and seen a movie. In fact, for someone who is used to seeing at least one a week, every week, the fact I’ve gone over half the year and not even seen 15 films is very odd for me. When looking at what was on there were 4 films I wanted to see, and then there was Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Now, it’s not that I thought the film looked bad or anything, it was just that there were 4 other films I’d much rather see and also the reviews of this film weren’t exactly stellar.
Though when we looked at the times, we were either going to have to wait nearly 2 hours till the next batch of films to start, rush to make a film starting in 5 minutes, or take our time and see Mike and Dave that was playing in 15 minutes’ time. Well, it won out. So when sitting down all I knew was it had a trailer that looked half decent, had actors and actresses I liked, and I tried my best to ignore all the hate it had been getting, and I got myself ready for what I hoped would at least be a solid comedy.
Now, right off the bat, here’s one thing I never thought I’d say. Anna Kendrick was the worst thing about this film. She has done comedies in the past like Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, and she’s funny, but her character in this just didn’t fit her at all, and she overacted so much stuff. Sure an argument can be made that some of the other actors did the same, but their natural comedic skills play into overacting, whereas for Kendrick is just made me cringe!
Because of that it really did bring the film down a few notches in the quality stakes, as did some of the dead and unfunny jokes, but all up I actually enjoyed this film more than I expected. It had some scenes that were straight up genius, and was generally solid throughout, but the problem was when it got bad it got bad. So go along to get some laughs and have a good time, but don’t expect something that will keep you on the floor laughing.
7.5 out of 10 from me!!!
